Gilbert's Slade, to the east of Woodford New Road, is open woodland with many fine old oak and hornbeam pollards and an open glade at its centre. It has many patches of common cow-wheat, food plant of the heath fritillary butterfly, and tormentil, with ling heather here and there.

Rising Sun Wood across the road also has many old pollards, principally hornbeam, and because it is grazed regularly it still has the feel of old wood-pasture. It too has an open glade, surrounding Bulrush Pond.
